Ever see the commercial on TV that shows a bank holding up it's customers? Don't laugh, it is not far from the truth.

If your child receives a check for $10.00 and takes it to the bank it was written on, there banks in Dickson Tn that may charge your child 50% of that to cash it because they don't have an account there. Your child is left with only $5.00 for their birthday money out of the ten. There seems to be an idea that some banks can charge $5.00 or more to cash a check written on their own bank. Unbelievable but true.

If any other business was to practice this, they would probably be up before a judge for extortion. Imagine towing your car to a shop for repairs. You can not afford to have it towed again but your repair shop tells you that there will be an extra charge because you are not a regular customer. How long would it take you to dial an attorneys number? Not long I'm sure but some banks appear to think they can do something similar.

If you write a check to someone who does not have a bank account; would you want to have to drive to the bank to cash it for them? After a few times I'm sure you would either change banks or start dealing in cash. Does your bank extort money?
